What does quality mean when performance is no longer reliable evidence of capability? As generative AI makes it easier to produce work that appears technically accomplished, Dickon Knowles explores how our assumptions about craft, expertise and originality are changing. It considers the difference between possessing a skill and accessing one through systems owned by others, and asks what this shift means for education, creative careers, authorship and the growing dependency of creative industries on technology platforms. Rather than arguing that AI removes the need for human judgement, the session invites us to separate the quality of an artefact from the knowledge, adaptability and ownership of capability behind it.
